Grey pneumatic (1226M) 3/8" Drive 26 Metric Master Socket Set.
A socket is a socket right? For the most part it is, but what sockets fill your tool box or shelves? For me it is Grey Pneumatic, these affordable but durable sockets have been by my side for the last seven years and I have yet to break one.
I was first introduced to these from the Mac tool dealer and he stood by them with his lifetime warranty just like the rest of the tools on his truck. With a much lower price point than the big name brands I decided to give them a try. Little would I know many years later they would still be going strong.
I prefer to use impact sockets when I can given their thicker construction and tighter clearances, they will put more torque into the head of the bolt. Which if there is a enough torque lost it can be the difference between a rounded off head and breaking the bolt/nut loose.
There are times when an impact socket just won’t fit due to the area surrounding the bolt which seems to be the downside of these sockets. Subaru intake manifold bolts are known for their tight fit and these won’t always work.
If you are a fan of using power tools like the Milwaukee M18 fuel impacts you will know that impact sockets are a must. Where a chrome socket can be brittle and break these will be perfectly happy to rattle a bolt/nut loose.
The latest iteration of these sockets have adding the an engraved size on the side of them. Which was just another slight oversight of these. The printed on sizes last for awhile but if you use these like I do, you will often find yourself squinting to see if that is a 13 or 15mm.
I find the carrying case they come in is an excellent addition to the product. You don’t have to spend extra money on socket rails or other products to keep them in order. They travel quite well but after 5 years of back and forthing to work, home, friends houses, junkyards, etc the little straps have finally given up, no longer able to hold the socket clam shell closed. A nicely sized bungie cord can pick up the slack.
I have since added many sets other Grey Pneumatic sets along side these, they are always a company I look into first when purchasing another set of sockets and have yet to be displeased by any of these purchases.
